Peru was elected for the first time to hold the Vice-Presidency of the Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The election, which was held by acclamation, took place during the 171st session of the Committee in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya.

This important appointment falls to Ambassador Romy Tincopa, Peru's current Permanent Representative to UNEP, serving as Vice President of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC).

The designation is a recognition of the South American country's commitment to environmental protection, the promotion of sustainable development, and its active participation in multilateral forums.

With this designation, Peru strengthens the region's voice in the global environmental agenda.

Likewise, the country reaffirms its leadership on crucial issues such as biodiversity conservation, pollution control, sustainable management of natural resources, and climate action.

The Committee of Permanent Representatives —a subsidiary body of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA)— is primarily responsible for ensuring the implementation of UNEA mandates.

It also reviews and approves work programmes and budgets, thereby strengthening environmental governance at the global level.
