Peru's Machu Picchu: Tourist protection network announces security protocol for visitors

16:23 | Urubamba (Cusco region), Sep. 12.

The Regional Tourist Protection Network (RPT) of Cusco approved in its latest session the activation of a protocol for the reception and safety of tourists during the days when protest measures take place in Machu Picchu Pueblo district and Urubamba province.

During the meeting —held on Thursday at the auditorium of the Regional Management of Foreign Trade, Tourism, and Handicrafts (Gercetur)— the issues related to the transfer of passengers from Machu Picchu Pueblo to the Inca Citadel along the Hiram Bingham route were evaluated.

This discussion took place in the context of the transition period for the entry of a new bus company following the termination of the concession to the company Consettur.

Within this framework, the RPT members approved the activation of the Protocol as a key tool to address potential situations with contingency actions.

Similarly, they agreed to strengthen inter-institutional coordination and maintain constant monitoring to provide an effective response to any risk situation.

Finally, tour operators and visitors were advised to anticipate potential contingencies to safeguard tourists' safety and ensure the continuity of services in Machu Picchu.

The session was attended by the Office of the Prosecutor for Tourism, the Tourist Police, IPERU (the official tourist information service), the Ombudsman's Office, the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), the Disaster Risk and Management Office (OGRD), the Regional Management of Transportation and Communications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chamber of Commerce, tourism sector associations, and professional associations.

On the protests

Various social organizations of Urubamba province are holding a demonstration today, including sit-ins.

The groups have confirmed that they will stage a 48-hour strike on September 15 and September 16 to demand the entry of a new company on the Hiram Bingham route and the withdrawal of Consettur, following the conclusion of its concession on September 4.
