Peru: Paddington Bear is the new sensation in Cusco's Machu Picchu Town

01:00 | Urubamba (Cusco region), Jan. 25.

Since Thursday, the town of Machu Picchu has been showcasing an endearing 'character' who is already becoming a sensation among the local population, as well as national and international tourists visiting or returning from the Inca citadel of our world wonder: the Paddington Bear's statue.

This sculpture was unveiled at Alameda Los Artesanos (Artisans' Promenade) by municipal authorities and British Ambassador to Peru, Gavin Cook.

The ceremony was attended by local residents of the town also known as Aguas Calientes.

Paddington is literally seated on a wooden bench, dressed in his classic attire and hat, enjoying a sandwich near the banks of the Aguas Calientes River, the name by which this town is also known, the gateway to the Wonder of the World.

Council members Hector Olivera, Sonia Hancco, and Alfredo Tapia, along with Ambassador Cook, initially unveiled a plaque that reads: "This statue was donated by the Government of the United Kingdom in collaboration with the Peruvian British Cultural Association, in celebration of the premiere of the film 'Paddington in Peru.'"

The diplomat stated that it is a privilege to be in a sacred place like Machu Picchu, adding that the presence of Paddington Bear represents shared values such as curiosity, friendship, and kindness.

Ambassador Cook mentioned that the character is part of children's literature, from the book "A Bear Called Paddington" by British author Michael Bond.

"The story of Paddington is one of two countries united; it is an iconic character not only in the United Kingdom but also worldwide," he expressed in Spanish-language remarks.

The diplomat also revealed that the film values Paddington's presence.

"This movie is very important; for the first time in his life, Paddington is back in the country of his birth and is attracting new generations of tourists to Peru, to Machu Picchu, to Machu Picchu Town," he emphasized.

Lastly, the envoy urged authorities and residents on the importance of preserving the environment, protecting the spectacled bear, and other species.

The Municipality of Machu Picchu highlighted that the third installment of the 'Paddington' film showcases this exciting adventure through Peru, which was released in theaters this month.

It features locations in Cusco and Lima, such as the Historic Center (including the Main Square) and the Miraflores seafront promenade.

In Cusco, the filming took place at the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, Huayna Picchu Mountain, and Machu Picchu Town.
