Agrarian Development and Irrigation Minister Angel Manero announced that five countries are interested in building the Majes Siguas Project located in Arequipa region, southern Peru.

"We want to inform the country that, just as last November we announced the start of the international call for proposals to build the Majes Siguas infrastructure in Arequipa (region), this week we already have the first results reflecting the expressions of interest from countries that want to participate in developing this project. We are pleased to announce that five countries have submitted their proposals," he stated.

The Cabinet member stressed that these are "countries of the highest level, in terms of infrastructure development, such as Israel, the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan."

High Quality Levels

"Therefore, with satisfaction, we inform Arequipa region that this project will be built by one of these five countries, and you can be assured that it will meet high levels of quality and execution," he said.

This is a comprehensive project, consisting of Majes I, the intermediate dam, and Majes II, the latter of which is pending the resolution of an arbitration, a task assigned to Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion).

"We are sure that we will provide updates in the following months," he indicated.

"For now, this international call for tenders to carry out the government-to-government project is moving forward," Manero noted, assuring that by April 30, the contract will have been awarded to one of those five countries; thus, "Arequipa region and agrarian Peru are being served."

Confidence and Security

In turn, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen welcomed the news reported by Midagri's head, as it reflects the interest of investors in Peru.

"Five world powers are eager to invest here in Peru. What does that mean? That is confidence, that is security, that is the reflection of a country that provides stability, clear rules; that is why these powerful and serious countries want to come and invest in Peru," he emphasized.

After mentioning that the investment in the Majes Siguas comprehensive project amounts to US$3 billion, Adrianzen indicated that "we must have confidence in 2025. That is where the security that the country transmits to investors lies."

Remarks were made during the press conference held at the end of the Council of Ministers session on Wednesday afternoon.
