Journalist and writer Maynor Freyre Bustamante, a member of the poetry group Movimiento Hora Zero, passed away this morning at the age of 84, the Lima College of Journalists, of which he was a member, announced today.

In a statement, the institution expressed its condolences to the journalist's family, friends, and colleagues.

It also announced that Maynor Freyre Bustamante's remains will lie in state today, starting at 4:00 p.m., at the Lima College of Journalists headquarters, located at 1474 Canevaro Avenue, in the Lince district.

The Lima College of Journalists highlighted Maynor Freyre Bustamante's career and commitment to the ethical practice of journalism and reiterated its solidarity with his family, friends, and colleagues. Likewise, the House of Peruvian Literature expressed its condolences in a statement upon learning of his passing.


Career as a journalist, writer, and poet

Journalist and writer Maynor Freyre Bustamante was born on April 2, 1941, and became an emblematic figure in Peruvian journalism and literature. A graduate of the School of Journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), he developed an extensive career in national media, where he served as editor and director of publications such as El Observador, Marka, Vistazo, Somos, and Todas las Artes, among others. He also contributed to widely circulated newspapers and supplements.

His work as a reporter and cultural critic was widely recognized. 

He also was a a distinguished and beloved professor at the Federico Villarreal National University, where he taught journalism from 1995. He held important positions in the School of Communication Sciences and the Federico Villarreal Cultural Center.

Recognized for his contributions to cultural journalism and literature, Maynor Freyre developed a body of narrative and poetic work published over several decades.

Among his novels, published mainly since the 1990s, are "Poligenio psicoterapéutico" (Psychotherapeutic Polygenium), "Par de sátrapas" (Pair of Satraps), "El poeta que tocaba tambor" (The Poet Who Played the Drum), and "Desmemorias de un pelagatos" (Memoirs of a nobody); titles in which he addressed Peruvian reality with irony and social criticism.

In the field of poetry, he published collections such as "Oraciones para un nuevo credo" (Prayers for a New Creed) and "Tríptico a la madre que partió" (Triptych to the Departed Mother), while in the short story genre, notable books include "Puro cuento" (Pure Fiction), "El team de los chacales" (The Jackals' Team), and "36 estampas sin bendecir" (36 Unblessed religious cards).

His work is complemented by volumes of interviews and chronicles, including "High Voices of Peruvian and Latin American Literature".
