The Government of Peru and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta (SMOM) reaffirmed in Rome the strong friendship and cooperation ties they have maintained since 1954.

It was the first visit by a Peruvian Foreign Affairs minister to the Order's headquarters.

During the meeting, Minister Pareja expressed his appreciation for the outstanding humanitarian work carried out by the SMOM in support of the world's most vulnerable populations and, in particular, those in Peru.

The two sides also highlighted their mutual interest in signing a new framework cooperation agreement and a postal services accord in the near future.

These initiatives will help expand the mechanisms for joint cooperation between the two parties.

The meeting also addressed the SMOM's interest in expanding its presence in the region through a strategic agenda that prioritizes key sectors such as healthcare, education, food security, and socioeconomic development for the benefit of the most vulnerable populations.

Lastly, the Cabinet member conveyed the Peruvian Government's interest in hosting an official visit by the Prince and Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra' John Dunlap, possibly next year.

With more than nine centuries of history, the Sovereign Order of Malta is one of the leading actors in international humanitarian diplomacy.

It also maintains a presence in more than 130 countries, where it fosters programs to support vulnerable populations.
