The Peruvian Government —through the
— on Wednesday welcomed the temporary ceasefire agreement reached by the Government of Israel and Hamas.
"The aforementioned agreement represents the largest diplomatic effort recorded after 47 days of clashes that have caused the death of civilians and their forced displacement," it said in a
communiqué.
Likewise, the Government of Peru expressed recognition of the mediation deployed by the governments of Qatar, the United States, and Egypt, which includes the release of 50 Israeli citizens kidnapped since the beginning of conflict, plus the entry of humanitarian aid.
"Guided by its commitment to multilateralism, international law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, Peru will continue to advocate for the two-State solution, Palestine and Israel, so that they can coexist in peace, within internationally-recognized and secure borders, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions," it stated.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the Government of Israel accepted the agreement with the Islamist group Hamas for the release of 50 kidnapped people, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners and a four-day truce.
The truce will begin on Thursday. It may be extended by the parties and also involves the entry of humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and fuel into Gaza.
