Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea Franco, along with
Defense Minister Jorge Chavez Cresta, reaffirmed Peru's aspiration to become a member of the
International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, Category C, for the 2024-2025 period, before the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the country.
During the activity, Gonzalez-Olaechea stated that the Peruvian intention is included in the foreign policy that has been renewed and that is projected onto the maritime, oceanic and Antarctic sphere, inspired in the inextricable link between Peruvians and the sea, which has shaped a vast and millenary maritime tradition, as an essential part of the national identity.
Likewise, the minister remarked that Peru recognizes the importance of international coordination and cooperation to address complex challenges that the maritime sphere faces at a global level, as well as the crucial role of the IMO in establishing technical and operational standards in international maritime transportation.
"We fully embrace the view of IMO in order to holistically and cooperatively address challenges that transcend national borders, such as safety in maritime navigation and transportation, the rights of seafarers, as well as the protection of the maritime world and environment," he said.
In this regard, the Cabinet member noted that Peru supports sustainable initiatives that promote the use of clean technologies in maritime transportation, with the aim of reducing the environmental footprint of this industry.
"We recognize the importance of innovation and investment in more efficient technologies that respect the environment and the habitat of indigenous peoples, in particular," he added.
For this reason, the Foreign Affairs sector's head stressed that the country will continue to actively contribute to the work of the IMO's
Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), in the
fight against climate change, through the adoption of requirements regarding
greenhouse gas emissions from international maritime transportation.
Furthermore, he recalled that Peru has played a crucial role during its membership in the IMO for the 2020-2021 biennium.
"During this period, the Peruvian delegation led the successful approval of amendments to the Constitutive Agreement, which include changes in the numerical composition of the Council and the term of office, representing an important milestone in the history of the IMO, as well as improving the operation and efficiency of the organization," he explained.
