President Jose Jeri on Tuesday approached a group of transport workers participating in a strike to protest extortion.

The Head of State arrived at the Ricardo Palma Bridge in Lima's Rimac district, one of the gathering points for transport workers.

On this occasion, the top official was accompanied by Cabinet Chief Ernesto Alvarez, as well as Ministers Vicente Tiburcio (Interior) and Aldo Prieto (Transportation and Communications).

Afterwards, the President joined Rimac District Mayor Nestor de La Rosa and union leaders at a mobile security unit in Acho, where Jeri met with them and listened to their requests.

Following the meeting, the top official stated that they made it clear to the transport workers that, thanks to the updated state of emergency in Lima and Callao incorporating many of their proposals, it is now "much more robust."

He added that police and military presence on the streets will be increased, as demanded by the demonstrators.

"We are coordinating the efforts of the entire (Peruvian) State, which has not been and is not an easy task, but there is strong will focused on tackling criminality, specifically the extortion that transport workers face," the President expressed.

"They are satisfied, as long as we fulfill the remaining agreements from previous accords and the specific points they demanded today," Jeri said, adding that Prime Minister Alvarez will provide further details later alongside the transport workers.
