Peru: District mayors voice support for government and democratic institutional framework

The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, held a working meeting with the Association of District Municipalities of Peru (Amudip) representatives, who expressed support for the government and democratic institutional framework.

During the session, issues were discussed including closing infrastructure gaps, 2026 Foncomun distribution, access to health and education services, continuity of public works, and the emergency caused by intense rainfall.

Before local authorities, the Head of State announced a transfer of budget allocations totaling S/599 million (US$178 million) within the public sector budget in favor of local governments to finance investment projects.

Likewise, the top official confirmed that the allocation, through the Fund for Interventions in the Event of Natural Disasters (Fondes), of a budget appropriation of S/100,000 (US$29,735) for each district affected by heavy rainfall has been authorized.

Representing the Executive Branch, Prime Minister Denisse Miralles took part in the working meeting as well.

This event was held at the Government Palace in Lima. It brought together mayors from different parts of the country.

Also present were Amudip Chairman and Desaguadero District Mayor (Puno region) Hector Sarmiento, Carmen Salcedo District Mayor (Ayacucho region) Nilton Berrocal, La Peca District Mayor (Amazonas region) David Cespedes, Huayllapampa District Mayor (Ancash region) Mahurto Vega, and Toro District Mayor (Arequipa region) Jonathan Alvaro.
