The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to fostering sustainable investments in Peru's water and sanitation sector as part of the Global Gateway strategy, which aims to promote cooperation, a fair green transition, inclusive digital transformation, and sustainable economic growth.

Precisely as part of this strategy, the E.U. in Peru, along with the Embassy of the Netherlands, recently convened the Water and Sanitation Working Group to encourage dialogue and collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders and to promote sustainable investments in this high-impact development sector.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Alexander Kofman, stressed that the Global Gateway initiative is an opportunity to open dialogue and leverage a diverse range of experiences capable of generating a real and lasting impact on water management.

This platform will help identify opportunities for public-private collaboration and address the challenge of closing investment gaps in potable water and sanitation, both in rural and urban areas.

Likewise, the diplomat emphasized the importance of integrating comprehensive water management and climate change aspects into projects.

"As members of the European Union, we are ready to work with Peru on innovative water and sanitation solution," he stated.

2025 Investment Portfolio

After presenting their 2025 investment portfolios, representatives from the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation, the State-run Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion), and the State-owned water utility Sedapal agreed on the importance of closing infrastructure gaps and integrating sustainability and circular economy principles into projects.

Meanwhile, representatives from the European Union in Peru, the French Development Agency (AFD), the German Development Bank (KfW), and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) presented their projects in the sector. These initiatives featured innovative approaches in integrated water management, watershed governance, water reuse, and water security.

European Union Economic and Trade Section Chief in Peru, Olivier Coupleux, concluded that the Global Gateway initiative presents a unique opportunity to build bridges between Europe and Peru.

"Within this framework, EU member states, European banks, and European companies join forces to propose sustainable and innovative investments in Peru's water and sanitation infrastructure," he stated.
