Within the framework of the APEC Peru 2024 forum, the United States Government will donate nine Black Hawk helicopters to the Peruvian National Police (PNP) to strengthen efforts against drug trafficking and transnational crime.

The initiative was presented in Lima on Saturday by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols, who highlighted the long-standing anti-narcotics collaboration between both nations.

"I am certain that all the achievements we have had in the fight against transnational crime and drug trafficking, over more than 50 years of collaboration on anti-narcotics efforts between both countries, will be surpassed with the technology we are bringing to Peru," Nichols said in a Spanish-language statement.

The agreement also includes the delivery of aircraft, along with a comprehensive training program for over 130 Peruvian pilots, crew members, and technicians.

This initiative seeks to modernize the PNP's air capabilities, which promises to enhance security and efficiency in the fight against illicit activities.

"I am honored to announce a US$65-million assistance package for the fight against drug trafficking and transnational crime in Peru. Our support will strengthen the capabilities of the Peruvian National Police to counter transnational crime and disrupt the illicit flow of drugs, money, and weapons," he specified.

Nichols explained that, following Congressional approval, a five-year transition period will begin, during which Peru will gradually assume greater administrative, operational, and financial responsibilities for the new fleet.

Full ownership of the helicopters will be transferred to Peru once the key milestones established in the agreement are achieved.

Lastly, he highlighted that since 2000, the U.S. has contributed over $1 billion in support to Peru to curb drug trafficking, combat organized crime, and strengthen the rule of law.
