The
President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Monday congratulated conservative leader
Friedrich Merz on his election victory in Germany's parliamentary elections.
Likewise, Peru's top official welcomed the success of the CDU/CSU coalition, which obtained the highest number of votes in Sunday's elections. This group is made up of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Merz, and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU).
"The President of Peru, Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, extends her congratulations to Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU for the results obtained in the parliamentary elections of February 23 in Germany. Similarly, she wishes them success in the next steps towards the formation of a Government," reads the post issued by the Presidential Office.
Peru also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation ties with the European country "for the benefit of both nations and in favor of peace and rules-based multilateral order."
Friedrich Merz is expected to become Germany's next Chancellor, as his party holds the largest share of seats in the Bundestag (German Parliament), which is responsible for electing the head of government. That post is currently held by Olaf Scholz.
