Peru participated in the historic World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Diplomatic Conference in Saudi Arabia, where the Riyadh Design Law Treaty was adopted.

This agreement aims to harmonize and strengthen the international protection of industrial designs, facilitate global trade, and foster innovation.

The Peruvian delegation —led by Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ricardo Silva Santisteban— played an active role in the negotiations alongside 134 Member States, both at the national level and as part of the Andean Community and the Group of Latin American and Caribbean countries

He led the substantive discussions on the Treaty, aiming to achieve a consensus text among all Member States.

Peru, along with other countries from the Global South advocated for and successfully achieved the inclusion of a requirement to indicate the origin of traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions related to industrial designs, in order to protect our indigenous peoples and local communities.

Similarly, a robust provision on technical assistance was included, which will support potential contracting parties in complying with the provisions of this international instrument.

Through its participation, Peru reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation in intellectual property and to fostering a legal environment that supports national designers and businesses, solidifying its role as a key player at multilateral forums.

The Riyadh Treaty represents a key advancement in establishing clear standards and simplifying the procedures for the international registration of industrial designs.

This tool will be crucial for Peruvian creators to protect their designs in global markets.

The diplomatic conference was hosted by Saudi Arabia at the King Abdul Aziz International Conference Center in Riyadh from November 11-22, 2024.
