Energia Azul plans to use four Pelton turbines for the 750MW Santa Maria hydro project in Peru, according to the company's 2,847-page EIS submitted to the energy and mines ministry.

The ministry granted Energia Azul a temporary concession for the project in September 2008 and gave the company 24 months to carry out feasibility studies.

In June 2009, the ministry approved the water resource use feasibility study and greenlighted the definitive water use study this past March, adds the document.

Santa Maria would span the regions of Ayacucho and Apurimac and take five years to build.

According to BNamericas, project components also include a 137m-high dam wall, a 515Mm3 reservoir and a 28.7km diversion tunnel.

The company estimates up to 3,800 workers will be employed during construction and 80 during operations.
