Agrarian Development Ministry promoted Peruvian cacao's commercial value at 'Chocoa 2025'

09:30 | Amsterdam (the Netherlands), Feb. 18.

The Peruvian Government, through the Ministry Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) and its commercial arm Agromercado, participated in "Chocoa 2025," an important international cacao fair held in the Dutch city of Amsterdam.

This event brought together key players from the value chain of this product with a focus on sustainability and quality.

Agromercado, alongside the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO) and with the support of the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPeru), held several meetings with European buyers during the fair, where a strong interest in working with producer organizations was evident, as they have the capacity to offer cacao with traceability, quality, and origin.

Among the business gatherings with representatives of European companies was Uncommon from the United States, an importer of cacao beans, as well as powder and butter.

Likewise, meetings took place with Gaia Cacao, a company from the Netherlands that offers import services for small batches to be broken down and distributed to niche European chocolateries, directly connecting family farmers with small chocolateries.

Conversations were also held with Dutch Crafting Markets, interested in receiving samples of small batches of cacao from Peruvian Amazonas and Huanuco regions, as well as Zotter Chocolate from Austria, a current buyer of Peruvian cacao, which expressed continued demand for larger volumes, especially of beans with Organic and Fair Trade certifications.

It is worth mentioning that the new European regulation (EUDR) for the export of Amazonian products will come into effect starting in 2026.

This regulation aims to mitigate deforestation and forest degradation in cacao, coffee, and oil palm crops, which is why actions are being developed by Midagri to support producers in adapting to the legislation and continue exporting goods to the European Union.

Presentation at 'Chocoa 2025'

Agromercado gave the presentation "Peruvian Cacao: History, Origin, Quality, and Flavors" at the panel discussion "Tourism with Flavor: Leveraging Sustainable Cacao Tourism," organized by the World Cocoa and Derivatives Tourism Network, led by Amora Carbajal.

All of this took place in coordination with the 'Chocoa 2025' fair, emphasizing the importance of this international space to promote the various genetic varieties of cacao produced by Peruvian family farming producer organizations.

Agromercado sparked great interest with the presentation of the Peruvian Cacao Route, which invites tourists to visit and learn about the cultivation process and the production of its derivatives.

From the high jungle of Cusco region to the Amazonian regions of San Martin, Ucayali, and Madre de Dios, these routes highlight not only the quality of Peruvian cacao but also the promotion of sustainable agroforestry practices and the economic boost to local communities.

Peru's participation in 'Chocoa 2025' strengthens the international projection of Peruvian cacao, highlighting its history, quality, and commercial potential.

Agromercado is also promoting this product in the domestic market. This year, it will carry out an important campaign to encourage the consumption of cacao and chocolate in our country.
