Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon stated that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Peru and the United States is extremely strong and will continue working to consolidate trade involving both nations.

These remarks were made after being asked whether the Peru-United States FTA is at risk of renegotiation by President Donald Trump's administration.

"We don't think so. We believe that our Free Trade Agreement with the United States is extremely strong. It is a Free Trade Agreement that will turn 15 years old this year, and which has been really crucial for the development of our exports all this time," Leon told Canal N.

"Let us remember that President Trump has already been Head of State while the FTA has been in force," she added.

However, the Peruvian minister pointed out that her sector is paying close attention to the strategies that the U.S. Government will implement.

"We are all prepared to continue expanding our export offerings to the United States, both in terms of agricultural exports and the textile sector," she emphasized.

The Peruvian high-ranking official said she has met with U.S. businesspeople and investors who are willing to invest in Peru.

Leon considered that the United States' trade policy will not be general, but will be addressed with each country independently.

"In our case, the strength of our economy, the strength of our currency, and legal stability are part of what will be taken into account to continue fostering this investment climate," she stated.
