The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday underscored that anchoveta fishing in Peru generated 37,000 indirect jobs, a GDP contribution equivalent to S/432,000,000 (about US$116,000,000) in revenue for the country, and a positive impact on economic recovery, which registered a 5.04% growth last May.

"The figures presented are significant and have a positive impact on economic recovery; last May, it reached a 5.04% growth, a rate not registered since the pre-pandemic period. We are in the homeland's economic recovery year," she stated.

The top official underscored that, at the end of the anchoveta fishing season, 2,430,539 metric tons of this resource were reached, which implies a GDP contribution equivalent to S/432,000,000 (about US$116,000,000).

Similarly, it led to the generation of 12,000 direct and 37,000 indirect jobs throughout the extractive fishing activity chain.

"In terms of exports, the activity contributed US$1.307 billion in foreign revenue for Peru. Besides, GDP growth for the fishing sector was 329% in May, statistics that indicate significant recovery," she noted.

In addition to this, Mrs. Boluarte said fish oil meal shipments are expected to contribute to total fishery exports, accounting for 8% of Peruvian fishery sales abroad.

"My Government reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable and responsible fishing. We will continue to support fishing communities, invest in research, and promote practices that ensure our children and grandchildren can enjoy the richness of the Peruvian sea," she stated.

The president announced that, in recognition of the importance of scientific research by the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe) which carries out periodic studies to evaluate the anchoveta biomass, S/9,300,000 (US$2,504,000) will be allocated to research maintenance on the Humboldt ship, through a supplementary credit.

On this occasion, the President was accompanied by Production Minister Sergio Gonzalez.
