The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Thursday reaffirmed her commitment to meet the demands and guarantee the rights of Peruvian indigenous or native women.

Mrs. Boluarte participated in the commemoration of the 2023 National Day of Indigenous or Native Women, held at the Ministry of Culture headquarters in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

Within this framework, the Head of State indicated that "the brave women who did not lose hope, and with their efforts have achieved a fairer country, are honored" on this date.

"As the first female President of the Republic —throughout more than 200 years of republican life, which constitutes a historic milestone— I reaffirm my commitment to continue working with you, dear sisters, who are part of the more than three million indigenous or native women so as to meet your demands and guarantee your rights," she expressed.

In this sense, the top official indicated that the gaps are enormous. Thus, it was decided to implement complementary measures of social compensation and a multisectoral strategy for entrepreneurship of women producers, rural and indigenous ones, throughout the country.

During her speech, the top official specified that indigenous women play an important role in Peruvian history —both in the independence and construction of the Republic, as well as in the permanent fight for rights.

"We remember Micaela Bastidas, (...) an example of courage in defending her ideals until her death. So, today we commemorate this date," she said.

Similarly, the top official mentioned other women important in history, such as María Parado de Bellido and her leading role in the Independence of Peru.

"Today, in Peru, there are many Micaelas and Marias Parado who play a central role in the fight against poverty," she added.

Moreover, Mrs. Boluarte stressed that indigenous women play a key role in defending the environment and in disseminating traditional knowledge, "being the main producers of food in communities and whose leadership is essential for strengthening indigenous organizations."
