Ambassador Enrique Roman Morey on Monday presented to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres the credentials that accredit him as Peru's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Organization based in New York City, the United States of America.

Last July, the Government —through Supreme Resolution No. 136-2024-RE— appointed retired Ambassador Roman Morey, with over 50 years of diplomatic career, as Peru's Permanent Representative to the UN.

The diplomat has held numerous positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served in various missions abroad.

In the past, the ambassador served as Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations in New York, holding the General Assembly Vice-Presidency and the interim Presidency.

He also served as Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and of the United Nations General Assembly First Committee.

His appointment aims to consolidate Peru's outreach in international organizations, as well as to strengthen multilateral relations and advocate for national interests.

The diplomat has vast experience. In the 1990s, he was elected Secretary-General of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) a significant position he held for eight years.

Roman Morey was reelected by acclamation for a second term. Under his leadership, OPANAL achieved full regionalization with the incorporation of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Cuba.

Similarly, he served as the Deputy Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament and Director of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) in Geneva between 2000 and 2006, during which time he led significant international conferences.

He was also elected by the United Nations General Assembly as Inspector a position he held from 2008 to 2011.
