Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero urged investors to aim for the integration of mining operations coexisting in the territories so as to ensure the sector's sustainability.

The government official stated this before an international audience of businesspeople and investors from around the world during his presentation, "Mining in Peru: A New Vision," at the Peru Day event on Monday.

It was held as part of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) -the world's largest mining exploration and development gathering in Toronto.

"Montero called on investors to aim for the integration of mining operations coexisting in the territories to ensure the sustainability of mining activity, replicating models applied in regions like British Columbia, Canada," the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) stated on the X platform.

Likewise, the Cabinet member spoke about the recovery of metallurgical activity in Peru through investments that enhance the value of diverse strategic minerals present in polymetallic and copper concentrates.

Progress on El Porvenir and Atacocha

The Energy and Mines minister met with executives from Nexa Resources, who outlined the progress of their project to integrate El Porvenir and Atacocha mining operations in Peru's Pasco region.

Likewise, they provided details on the project to extend the lifespan of the Cerro Lindo mining unit, which currently uses seawater for its operations.

The water is pumped from 60 kilometers away and transported for desalination purposes.

Minister Montero highlighted the company's efforts to ensure sustainable mining activities.

Similarly, he expressed his interest in visiting the Cajamarquilla refinery, the country's leading refined zinc producer, which adds value to the mineral resource.

Open Doors to Mongolia

Minister Jorge Montero met with Tsevegdorj Tuvaan, head of Mongolia's Ministry of Industry and Natural Resources. The latter expressed interest in learning about Peru's mining sector and the country's potential to attract foreign investment.

"The future is seawater desalination to prevent companies from coming into conflict with communities. The second key issue is that the mining sector needs a territorial perspective. Companies should focus not only on their projects but also on territorial integration," Montero stated.

Moreover, the minister added that if Mongolia seeks to promote investments in Peru, it is welcome to do so.

Lastly, he expressed support for a delegation of Peruvian mining businesspeople to visit the Asian country to explore business opportunities.
