The Peruvian Government, through its
, has condemned the acts of repression and persecution occurring in Venezuela, as well as the arbitrary detentions which include Peruvian citizens.
"Given the serious allegations made today by the President-elect of Venezuela, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, and Mrs. Maria Corina Machado, the Government of Peru strongly condemns the acts of repression, persecution, arbitrary detentions, and kidnappings perpetrated by Nicolas Maduro's regime against political opponents, their families, and foreign citizens, including four Peruvian citizens," the government agency indicated in a
communiqué Tuesday evening.
It added that these acts not only violate fundamental human rights but also represent a direct attack on democratic values.
"By demanding the immediate cessation of these practices that go against life and human dignity, the Government of Peru demands the prompt release of all persons arbitrarily detained," the document concluded.
On detention of Peruvians
The Cabinet member indicated that efforts are being made to ascertain their whereabouts.
"We only know that they were arrested between September and October of last year in different parts of Venezuela," he stated.
The diplomat indicated that they were not detained together, but that Venezuelan authorities are already accusing them without any evidence of conspiring against the Maduro regime.
"They are ordinary citizens; we don't even know where they are or whether they are in elsewhere in Venezuela," Minister Schialer said, mentioning that the four Peruvian nationals are male.
The ambassador indicated that he will travel to Panama, where he will meet with various foreign ministers and deputy foreign ministers to discuss the international community's next steps to find a solution to the situation in Venezuela.
