The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday led the signing of the inter-institutional cooperation agreement for the development of the Chonta Dam Project in Cajamarca region.

The Chonta Dam Project entails an investment worth S/516 million (about US$138 million).

It was also learned that the consolidation of this project will benefit more than 320,000 residents in the abovementioned northern Andean region of Peru.

The signing ceremony saw the participation of Ministers Angel Manero (Agrarian Development-Irrigation) and Jose Arista (Economy-Finance), among other national and regional authorities.

This event took place at the Government Palace in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

Last June, Minister Manero announced that construction of the Chonta Dam would begin next year.

The Cabinet member indicated that this project has been on hold since 2012. He added that the technical documentation for this public work had not even advanced.

On the other hand, he said that the Chonta Dam is a vital project for Cajamarca because this region is experiencing water rationing in some areas.
