Peru: 444 districts in northern coast and highlands at risk due to heavy rains

12:49 | Lima, Mar. 5.

The National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) has reported that 444 districts in the northern coast and highlands are at risk of being affected by landslides, mudslides, or other types of mass movements.

This is based on the risk scenario developed by the National Center for Disaster Risk Estimation, Prevention, and Reduction (Cenepred), following Weather Advisory No. 66 from the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi), which forecasts rainfall from March 6 to 8.

According to the report, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, and Apurimac regions have the highest number of districts at very high risk, with 45, 43, and 41 districts, respectively, followed by Cusco (26), Puno (14), Piura (13), Junín (10), Arequipa (5), and Lima (1).

Additionally, 246 districts in these regions, as well as Tumbes, are classified as high-risk.

Preparation and Prevention

In response to this situation, Indeci urges local and regional government authorities to ensure that evacuation routes are clear and properly marked, so they can guide the population to safe areas away from riverbanks or ravines.

Authorities should also verify the availability of healthcare centers, fire stations, and police stations within their jurisdictions in case of emergencies.

Likewise, Indeci recommends that residents reinforce and protect their roofs and establish an early warning system using whistles, bells, alarms, sirens, or loudspeakers in coordination with local authorities.

Through the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), Indeci is monitoring the affected regions and coordinating with regional and local authorities to assess the impact of this weather phenomenon.
