The Peruvian government has announced that Monday, December 23rd, and Tuesday, December 24th, will be non-working days for public sector employees, creating a long holiday weekend that includes Christmas Day on December 25th.
According to Supreme Decree 011-2024-PCM, published in the Official Gazette El Peruano, public sector employees who take these days off must compensate for the hours in subsequent weeks, as determined by their Human Resources Office.
These workers will receive their regular salaries with no additional payments.
Private sector employers may adopt this measure by mutual agreement with their employees, including arrangements to recover the hours. If no agreement is reached, the employer will decide.
Exceptions for essential public services
The decree specifies that workers in critical sectors for essential services to the society will not be able to benefit from the non-working days for this Christmas season. This includes employees in healthcare, sanitation, electricity, water, gas, fuel, telecommunications, transportation, security, food supply, and funeral services.
Additional Non-Working Days in December:
December 30 (Monday): Non-working day for the public sector.
December 31 (Tuesday): Non-working day for the public sector.
Christmas Day, December 25th, is a public holiday as stipulated by Article 6 of Legislative Decree 713. Employees required to work on this day, due to their schedule or employer needs, must either receive a compensatory day off or be paid triple of their regular salary.
The government’s decision aims to balance economic activity with opportunities for rest and recreation during the holiday season.
