Venezuelan citizens in the Peruvian capital, Lima, gathered on Thursday to express their rejection of the upcoming presidential inauguration of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, scheduled for January 10.
"Edmundo Gonzalez is our President-elect. July 28 was a date that will go down in history for us Venezuelans. We won! Venezuela has spoken; it has said enough of dictatorships, enough of tyrannies," one protester stated, while the group chanted slogans such as "Venezuela, freedom!"
The Venezuelan community in Lima rejects the official results of the National Electoral Council (CNE), which declared Maduro the winner of the 2024 presidential elections without publishing a detailed count.
Instead, they support Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who is currently in the Dominican Republic but has announced that he will travel to Caracas on Friday.
Last Sunday, Gonzalez Urrutia, 75, posted a video on social media addressing the Venezuelan Armed Forces, urging them to recognize him as Commander-in-chief.
"On January 10, by the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people, I must assume the role of Commander-in-Chief," he expressed.
Protest marches were even called for in Caracas, which began today.
The Venezuelan opposition has posted copies of electoral records on a website to support Gonzalez Urrutia's alleged victory, but Chavismo denies the validity of said documents.
On the other hand, demonstrations in support of Gonzalez Urrutia have not only taken place in Peru. Similar marches have been registered in various countries around the world, such as Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Spain.
