on Wednesday told Venezuela's President-elect Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia that the world's democratic countries are confident that the legitimate will of the Venezuelan people, expressed at the polls, will prevail. She added that he will soon be leading the destiny of his homeland.
"We are facing a legal and legitimate cause, supported by all democracies of the world. Today, we remember that true power lies in the free will of the majority and not in the clutches of a tyranny that chose to crush the values of Western culture," she stated.
The top official said that the mockery of the will of Venezuelan citizens is the "expression of an autocratic tyranny that we Peruvians know and that stained our country with blood" in 1980 when the Shining Path terrorist organization declared war on the nation, and when violent demonstrations were endorsed two years ago.
Recognition of President-elect
The Head of State noted that Mr. Gonzalez Urrutia was democratically elected on July 28, 2024, by the will of Venezuelans, which is why Peru considers it a patriotic duty to receive him at the Government Palace, the symbol of Peruvians' democratic power.
"We recognize your election as the legal and legitimate President of Venezuela, confirmed at the polls and on the records published by the democratic and patriotic forces of Venezuela, which have reported to the world a victory by the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people," she expressed.
The top official recalled that Peru has been standing with Venezuela throughout its history and that it stands alongside that nation in the fight for freedom and democracy, to provide them with strength and to tell the President-elect that he is not alone.
Mrs. Boluarte said that international organizations, such as the Organization of American States (OAS), are working to ensure that the Venezuelan vote is respected and that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia leads the future of his homeland.
"I hope that you will soon be in Venezuela, leading the destiny of your country in peace, democracy, and the rule of law for the Venezuelan people," she reiterated.
The Peruvian President also stated that over 8 million Venezuelans who have left their homeland due to the situation in Venezuela hope to be reunited with their families and return to their country of origin.
Decoration
Previously, Mrs. Boluarte presented Mr. Gonzalez Urrutia with the Order of the Sun of Peru, in the Rank of Grand Cross, in recognition of his unwavering commitment to defending democratic values, respecting human rights, and consolidating democracy in Venezuela.
In turn, the President-elect expressed his gratitude for the award. He stated that it is a sign of support for the struggle to restore democracy, which Venezuelans are carrying out inside and outside their country "with determination and hope."
The ceremony was attended by Cabinet Chief Gustavo Adrianzen, along with Ministers Elmer Schialer (Foreign Affairs), Jose Arista (Economy-Finance), Morgan Quero (Education), and Walter Astudillo (Defense), among others.
