Peru: PCM laments passing of former PM Walter Martos

The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on Tuesday lamented the passing of former Prime Minister and former Defense Minister, retired Peruvian Army Major General Walter Roger Martos Ruiz, at age 67.

"His outstanding work during the COVID-19 pandemic leaves an example of service. Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones," the PCM expressed via social media.


Similarly, the Ministry of Defense expressed its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the former President of the Council of Ministers.

"We deeply lament this loss that plunges the Defense sector and our country into mourning," the government agency added.


Walter Martos Ruiz served as Prime Minister from August 6, 2020, to November 10, 2020, during the administration of former President Martin Vizcarra.

Between October 3, 2019, and August 6, 2020, he served as Minister of Defense in the same administration, during which time he deployed actions from the Armed Forces in support of the population facing the COVID-19 pandemic.


Professional Career

Martos Ruiz obtained a degree in Military Sciences from the Chorrillos Military School and a Master's degree in Military Sciences with a mention in Strategic Planning and Decision Making from the Peruvian Army War College.

He also held a doctorate in Management and Development from the Peruvian Army Scientific and Technological Institute.

As part of his military career, he served as Chief of Staff of the Army, Chief of Staff of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, General Commander of Education and Doctrine of the Army, Director of the Chorrillos Military School, among others.
