National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo estimated that 50 political parties and 12,000 candidates could participate in the 2026 general elections to fill the positions of President, Vice- Presidents of the Republic, deputies, senators, and Andean parliamentarians.

In remarks to Andina News Agency, Burneo stated that 39 parties are currently registered in the JNE's Political Organizations Registry (ROP). Another 36 are pending registration.

"We estimate there could be around 50 parties could participate in the 2026 general elections, with about 12,000 candidates, including (those for) senators, deputies, the Andean Parliament, also for the Presidency and Vice-Presidencies," he detailed.

The official specified that the deadline for registering any political party is before the call for general elections, which should be issued before April 12, 2025, one year prior to the general elections, according to electoral legislation.

The JNE chief stated that the electoral body is working to complete the procedure for these political organizations.

He added that the deadlines for questioning registrations, publications, and objections will begin to close this January.

"The threshold we have is before the call for elections. By that date, we will have the exact number of parties that will participate in the next electoral process in 2026," he indicated.

Burneo said the JNE and the Electoral System will rise to the challenge of organizing elections with numerous political parties and candidates, ensuring that the results reflect the population's will as expressed at the polls.

"We can fully guarantee transparency; the work of the JNE and the Electoral System, in general, will rise to this great challenge. Trust us again, our work will always be impartial, transparent, and focused on ensuring the best result of the electoral process," he stated.

Burneo said the JNE will strengthen the population's civic culture and provide adequate information so that citizens can have all the necessary elements they need to cast their vote.

He also indicated that the challenge of designing an electoral ballot containing numerous political organizations and candidates corresponds to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), which has been working on this matter.
