The possibility of Ricardo Gareca returning to lead the Peruvian National football team is not dismissed. The Argentine coach himself stated that he would not close the door to a country where he felt comfortable and that he knows very well.
Although he is currently focused on his role as the head coach of Chile, Gareca acknowledged that he would never dismiss the chance to work in Peru again, as it is a country that treated him well and where he spent nine years of his life.
"I would never rule out Peru because I spent so many years there. I have personal ties, so I wouldn’t close the door to anyone, especially not to a country where I felt so comfortable and that I know so well. I had the chance to coach ‘La U’ [Universitario de Deportes] for a year and a half, and I spent seven and a half years with Peru. So, I spent nine years of my life in Peru," Gareca said on Bajo Presión.
The 66-year-old strategist emphasized that at this stage of his life, he doesn’t make long-term plans and is fully focused on his current role leading the Chilean national team, which is currently second-to-last in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
"Nowadays, I am always very focused on the present. At this stage of my life, I don’t make long-term plans," he said.
It is well known that Ricardo Gareca coached Universitario de Deportes for two seasons, between 2007 and 2008, winning the Apertura Tournament in his second year.
He also led the Peruvian national team, guiding them to the 2018 World Cup and reaching the intercontinental playoff for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
