Peru: Experts assess conditions of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu to decide on reopening

11:44 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jan. 25.

A multidisciplinary team, led by the Decentralized Culture Directorate in Cusco (DDC Cusco), has begun a thorough inspection and evaluation of the Inca Trail Network to Machu Picchu, which remains closed to visitors until March 31 due to the impact of heavy rains.

This team started its work on Tuesday and will finish today.

According to the DDC Cusco, the goal is to determine the reopening date for the Inca Trail Network to Machu Picchu, following the suspension of tourist visits due to emergencies caused by intense rains.

The measure has been in place since March 1.

"Currently, personnel from the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park of DDC Cusco continue rehabilitation and maintenance work on various sections of the Inca Trail Network to Machu Picchu, which were affected by landslides, rockfalls, and fallen trees, obstructing transit along the pre-Hispanic route," Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park Chief Nino del Solar stated.

The Inca Trail Network to Machu Picchu has been closed to visitors since February.

Throughout the month, this measure was implemented for maintenance and conservation work on the cultural heritage, service infrastructure, and natural ecosystem recovery.

The initial plan was to reopen access to tourists on March 1.

However, authorities decided to postpone it until March 15 due to intense rains and the associated risk, such as landslides, mudslides, river overflows, and other hazards affecting the area and the entire Cusco region.

The measure applies to all routes within the Inca Trail Network of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.

It was stated that maintenance work and coordination with relevant entities are underway to assess and rehabilitate the affected trails, ensuring the safety of visitors, guides, tour operators, and support staff.

The official document specifies that this measure was taken to protect the physical integrity and health of visitors, given the risks posed by intense rainfall, which has caused landslides and instability along various sections of the trails.
