Peru will host the 40th Session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which will take place in Lima from October 9 to 11, and in which the South American country will assume the Pro-Tempore Presidency for the period 2025-2026.

This is the most important conference of this United Nations organization, which is held every two years and will feature the participation of high-level representatives from its 46 member countries.

They will address the most important issues for the region's economic and social development.

The main theme of this edition will be "Development Traps in Latin America and the Caribbean: Vital Transformations and How to Manage Them."

As a prelude to the inauguration, National Day will be celebrated on October 9, during which leading Peruvian specialists will discuss key issues for the country's development, such as the necessary reforms for digital transformation and the private sector’s role in promoting goods and services for economic growth.

During the main event, four roundtable discussions will be held, in which high-ranking national authorities will participate, along with leaders and academics from the region.

The roundtables will address strategic issues such as, first, the traps in development in Latin America and the Caribbean and the necessary transformations; then, how to achieve higher, sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth.

Thirdly, they will discuss how to reduce inequality, promote inclusion and social mobility, and lastly, how to boost sustainability and tackle climate change.

In addition, a dialogue of foreign ministers and high-level authorities from Latin America and the Caribbean will be held, in which ECLAC's proposals and other global initiatives related to sustainable development will be discussed.

It is worth noting that this will be the fourth time that Peru hosts this important regional event, having previously done so in 1969, 1984, and 2014.

About ECLAC

ECLAC —which is headquartered in Santiago, Chile— is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations.

It was founded with the purpose of contributing to the economic development of Latin America, coordinating actions directed towards this end, and reinforcing economic ties among countries and with other nations of the world.

The promotion of the region's social development was later included among its primary objectives.
