At the United Nations on Monday, President Dina Boluarte highlighted that Peru is taking decisive action to address the structural gaps which still persist and limit the development of women and girls.

The Head of State delivered her speech this morning during the Fourth World Conference on Women, held within the framework of the UN General Assembly 80th session.

The top official noted that, since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action at that conference (1995), significant progress has been made, such as reducing gaps in access to education and the labor market for women.

She added that regulations have been strengthened to combat violence and discrimination against female citizens, among other achievements.

"However, structural gaps that limit the development of women and girls still persist, as extreme and multidimensional poverty, discrimination, and violence continue to affect us disproportionately. In response, Peru is taking decisive action," Mrs. Boluarte expressed.

In this regard, the President detailed that Peru approved the National Gender Equality Policy in 2019.

Likewise, she highlighted the creation of more than 400 Women's Emergency Centers nationwide, which operate with an intercultural approach to address gender-based violence cases, with the aim of putting an end to this scourge.

"We are working to ensure women’s access to quality education, as well as to foster greater labor inclusion and increase their political participation at all levels of government. And I am very proud to report that child marriage was abolished in 2023," Mrs. Boluarte highlighted at another point.

In her speech, the top official also mentioned that publicly funded projects are being implemented to strengthen women’s economic autonomy.

Moreover, she highlighted the creation of the National Care System to legally guarantee this right, as well as to assess and certify the skills of caregivers, many of whom are women.
