Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer met with Australia's Ambassador to Peru, Maree Ringland, to strengthen bilateral cooperation and explore new investment and trade opportunities, particularly in key sectors such as mining and agriculture.

Similarly, the Cabinet member emphasized the importance of promoting an exchange of experiences in sustainable mining, upholding high environmental and social standards.

In the agricultural sector, the minister underscored Peru's interest in resuming asparagus exports to Australia, reaffirming the South American country's commitment to the highest sanitary standards for its export products.

In 2024, trade between the two nations reached US$248.4 million, establishing Australia as Peru's main trading partner in Oceania.

Peru and Australia have a Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2020, and are members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which positions the Asia-Pacific region as a hub for trade, innovation, and economic development.

As part of the diplomatic agenda, Minister Schialer expressed the advisability of holding the IV Meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism in Lima in the first half of 2025, with the aim of consolidating progress in the bilateral relationship.

He also expressed his gratitude to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for supporting Peru's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as demonstrated during APEC Peru 2024 Leaders' Week.

This meeting reaffirms both nations' commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship, opening new opportunities for development and cooperation for mutual benefit.
