"The results of the second fishing season have been quite significant. A quota of 2.51 million tons was set; to date, over 95% of it has been reached; that is, more than 2.4 million tons, marking the highest catch level for a second season in the last decade," he indicated.
The government official stressed that this high catch level is also due to responsible and sustainable management of fishing authorized by the Ministry of Production (Produce).
Similarly, the Cabinet member highlighted that it represents an increase in exports worth over US$1.4 billion.
"This result is also linked to significant sources of employment, approximately 50,000 direct and indirect jobs provided by the fishing industry for indirect human consumption in our country," Gonzalez stated.
The minister indicated that the sector's outlook for 2025 is positive.
Gonzalez added that Imarpe has been conducting scientific assessments of various species in both the northern and southern areas.
"For example, the giant squid vessel has already set sail to identify the biomass currently present in Peru. In this regard, the outlook for 2025 is significant; we believe that economic growth this year will also have the fishing sector as an important factor," he noted.
