Peru hosts 35 renewable energy projects in portfolio

17:00 | Lima, Jul. 18.

Energy-Minister Minister Romulo Mucho on Thursday indicated that there is a portfolio of 35 renewable energy projects which can be developed in Peru.

"We have almost 35 renewable energy projects, but that also has to require a series of permits," he told TVPeru.

The Cabinet member indicated that four renewable energy plants are under construction for this year: the Clemesi photovoltaic solar plant (Moquegua region), the Matarani photovoltaic solar plant (Arequipa region), the Wayra wind farm extension, and the San Juan wind farm (Ica region).

"All these plants will deliver just over 500 megawatts. Also under construction is a hydroelectric plant in Puno, San Gabán III, which will deliver 210 megawatts, bringing the total to more than 700 additional megawatts for the interconnected system," he detailed.

Mucho explained that Peru has already identified the areas where there is adequate wind speed that enables large blades of wind power plants to generate energy, as well as the locations with the highest concentration of solar radiation for photovoltaic plants.

"We are also currently building photovoltaic plants in the jungle, because a major task is to solve the issue in (the city of) Iquitos and how we will provide it with a power generation center. It is a pending task that we have, and we are exploring all possibilities," he indicated.

On the other hand, the minister highlighted that Peru has potential to generate over 60,000 megawatts of electric energy through hydroelectric plants.

"That involves building large dams and reservoirs, which could pose some challenges during the environmental assessment," Mucho noted.

"Energy drives development; it moves the world, but in Peru we still have many gaps to close," he added.
