Peru: Cusco's seven-colored Vinicunca mountain reopens doors, tourists enter for free

12:58 | Quispicanchi (Cusco region), Jul. 18.

The seven-colored Vinicunca mountain —the second most important tourist attraction in Cusco region— reopens its doors to domestic and foreign visitors thanks to the resumption of the access route to this zone located in Quispicanchi province, southeastern Peru.

This was stated by Cusco's Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Gercetur) Chief Saul Caipani, who highlighted the agreement and articulated efforts by regional, district, and communal authorities who agreed to declare a truce and reopen the route while evaluating a definitive solution to the conflict.

Likewise, the official underscored that tourists who visit the seven-colored mountain will be allowed to enter for free through the access point enabled in Cusipata district.

Entrance to Vinicunca mountain via the Cusipata route had been closed since November 2023 due to a dispute involving the management of access to the attraction.

Several communities were disputing ownership and the right to do so. Following the intervention of various government entities, it was agreed to declare a truce and reopen access to the tourist attraction while seeking a definitive solution.

This measure —adopted on July 8 at the working roundtable meeting between authorities and representatives— will remain in force until the conclusion of dialogue space and a final agreement is reached.

The Vinicunca mountain access route reopening ceremony took place on July 16. It featured dances, music, and the presence of authorities such as the Gercetur Cusco head, the Cusipata mayor, among others.

Caipani announced that the next working group meeting will be held on August 6. A proposal to implement an entry control system for Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain and to update the site plan will be evaluated.
