Peru consolidated a cooperation partnership with Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom through the signing of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) for the protection of Amazonian forests.

The JDI fosters cooperation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, safeguard biodiversity and nature, as well as promote sustainable forest development and management in Peru.

The document was signed by Ministers Felipe Meza (Agrarian Development and Irrigation), Nelly Paredes (Environment), and  Fatima Altabas (Culture).

Representing the cooperating countries, participants included the following Ambassadors to Peru: Sabine Bloch (Germany), Per Anders Nilsen (Norway), and Su-Lin Garbett-Shiels (United Kingdom).

Representatives of Amazonian regional governments and Indigenous organizations were present at the ceremony, along with other guests involved in negotiating this important cooperation commitment.

Willingness to cooperate

During his remarks, Minister De Zela stressed that the signing of the JDI expresses Peru's willingness to cooperate with close partners, protecting Peruvian Amazonia while consolidating a strategic partnership for climate, biodiversity, and Indigenous peoples' sustainable development.

He explained that the JDI, which will be implemented between 2026 and 2030, will help consolidate Peru's positioning as a "reliable actor in the international climate architecture."

In her remarks, Ambassador Sabine Bloch emphasized that, for Germany, Peru is a strategic partner.

She added that the Peruvian Amazonia constitutes a global public good that influences the planet's ecosystem.

Norwegian Ambassador Per Anders Nilsen said it is important for the JDI to continue fostering the Amazonia's development.
