The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Sunday announced that Peru and Japan have approved a joint declaration to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations, accompanied by a roadmap for the next 10 years.

The announcement was made following the conclusion of the working meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and the delegation that accompanied him during his official visit to Peru.

"I would like to highlight that today the Prime Minister and I have approved the joint declaration to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Peru and Japan, which is accompanied by a roadmap guiding our joint efforts for the next 10 years," she stated.

Similarly, the top official noted that this roadmap is organized into key areas: political, diplomatic, economic, bilateral cooperation, social, people-to-people ties, as well as security and defense.

"I thank all those present for placing special importance on the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Peru and Japan, and I invite you to directly contribute to building the beginning of a new phase of 150 years of profound and beneficial friendship for our nations," she remarked.

The President emphasized that the meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister was "highly fruitful," allowing both countries to better leverage their opportunities and address shared challenges.

Historical Relations

The Head of State highlighted that Peru was the first nation to establish diplomatic relations with Japan.

The top official recalled that Japanese migration began in 1899 with the arrival of the Sakura Maru ship, marking the start of the Nikkei community in Peru.

"This Nikkei community has contributed significantly to the cultural identity and economic growth of Peru, being the third-largest such community in the world," she stated.

Mrs. Boluarte also noted the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Nikkei community and the 35th anniversary of the Peruvian community in Japan, which form the cornerstone of bilateral relations.

Additionally, she highlighted Japanese cooperation with Peru through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has helped to reduce social disparities across various regions of the country.
