Peru: Fin Ministry works to foster economic development with 4% GDP rate

08:47 | Lima, Jun. 19.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has been working intensively to strengthen the national productive activity recovery process so as to achieve growth rates of around 4% in the following months of 2024, Minister Jose Arista indicated.

"The April results have been favorable. We must continue working to ensure that these results are sustainable, with monthly growth rates of around 4%," he said during the presentation of Cofide's sustainable bond investment program.

The government official remarked that achieving monthly growth rates of less than 3% do not contribute much to the goal of boosting economic development.

Mining activity

Furthermore, the government official underscored that Peru has one of the world's largest copper reserves.

"It is the future's metal, which is why we foresee that its international value will increase," he commented.

As with copper, Arista mentioned that there are three other minerals, including gold. In this sphere, Peru is among the top countries hosting significant reserves.

"14% of Peruvian territory is awarded for mining projects, but only 1.5% of the national territory is under mining exploitation," he mentioned.

Agro-exports

Although the minister deems Peru as a mining country, Arista said it is also necessary to boost growth and development of other economic activities.

"For example, the agricultural sector's performance stands out, whose exports are on the rise and, thanks to the Port of Chancay, it will have great expansion potential. Thus, we are committed to the execution of several irrigation projects, such as Majes II, Chavimochic, and Chinecas, among others," he expressed.

All this —Arista asserted— will enable the agricultural frontier and agrarian production to be expanded.

"With these (public) works, we could increase our agro-exports from US$10 billion to US$25 billion a year," he noted.

Within this framework, Minister Arista highlighted the Chinese market's importance.
