| Paris (France), Jun. 13.
On the second day of the
Tenth Session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
in Paris on Wednesday, the
Peruvian Government
and
UNESCO
signed an important agreement for Latin America.
It is the renewal of the covenant to
designate the
Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL)
as a
Category 2 Center
, under the auspices of
UNESCO
and with the Peruvian southern city of Cusco as its headquarters.
The
agreement signing was performed by
Peruvian Culture Minister Leslie Urteaga
, who brought a power of attorney from
President Dina Boluarte
and
Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea
; and
UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Ernesto Ottone.
This
agreement proves the Peruvian State's commitment, through the
Ministry of Culture
, for the continuity of
CRESPIAL
as a Category 2 Center.
Thus,
Peru reaffirms itself as a key actor to strengthen the coordination among 19 countries that currently make up
CRESPIAL
, through the execution of multinational projects of significant impact and which "remind us that culture transcends territorial borders."
CRESPIAL
fosters regional integration and cooperation for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) within the framework of sustainable development and intercultural dialogue.
Category 2 Centers under the auspices of UNESCO are created to contribute to the achievement of the organization's objectives.
In the case of
CRESPIAL
,
it is a body that seeks to contribute to the development of the
2003 UNESCO Convention
objectives for the safeguarding of ICH.
Last Tuesday,
Minister Urteaga affirmed the Peruvian Government is committed to working so as to strengthen public policies for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and its community of bearers.
