U.S. supports Peru's people, will work with whoever is elected President

The United States on Wednesday pledged to work with those who are elected in the presidential elections to be held in Ecuador and Peru, whose citizens will go to the polls this Sunday, April 11, amid the social and economic deterioration caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We support the people of Peru, we support the democracy and the democratic processes throughout the Western Hemisphere, including in Peru. And we look forward to working with whomever is elected in free and fair democratic elections," Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Ned Price, said during a press briefing.

On April 11, Peru will start to elect the person who will take office after four presidents alternated between 2016 and 2021.

Eighteen (18) candidates from across the political spectrum are running for office in Peru, but polls suggest that none of them would be able to obtain the percentage necessary to win the Presidency of the Republic in the first round. If so, the second round would be held on June 6.

Via Twitter, Acting Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Julie Chung, expressed today Washington D.C.'s desire to work with the one to succeed current Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno, who has governed the country since May 2017.

The United States salutes the Ecuadorian people as they prepare to vote on Sunday.
