Peru is the major exporter of guinea pig meat in the world, accounting for 71.3% of the total, according to "Potential of Guinea Pig Meat Market 2019," a study conducted by the South American country's
Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).
The report indicates that the main destination for guinea pig meat is the United States (making up 99.9% of total exports), while Japan, Canada, South Korea, Italy, and Aruba together represent 0.1% of said shipments.
The
consumers of this meat in the United States are Peruvians, Ecuadorians, and Bolivians residing in said country.
According to Minagri, this sector constitutes the potential market for such product.
However, the market can be expanded by promoting the advantages of this Andean food.
