The country that improved the most on the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results was Peru, as it develops a sustained education policy that supports rural schools and reading programs, new Secretary General of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) Mariano Jabonero affirmed.
The OIE official said the institution's aim is to build on the work undertaken by countries in the region in favor of education.
Jabonero mentioned Peru's experience while referring to OEI's contribution to Spanish-speaking countries —including Spain— in an
interview with Spain's ABC daily.

"Peru is the country that improved the most in
PISA, thanks to a good and sustained policy supporting rural schools and reading programs, and nobody knows it," he commented.
The
OEI —he continued— not only helps ministries but communities like Madrid, Castile and Leon (…) as well as Asturias in Spain. The important thing is that OEI improves the quality of work undertaken by the entire Ibero-American region.
He also noted the experience of Portugal —the most advanced country in the field of educational quality all over Europe.
The secretary-general said public schools there are highly rated thanks to the boost to Portuguese, math, and teaching.
Jabonero acknowledged Ibero-America has made a significant progress in terms of education but —in spite of this— suffers from certain pseudo-colonization —pedagogically speaking— since Finland, Korea, and Singapore remain its main reference points in this area.
