—the country's leading university— enter the global top 400 for the first time in the history of the QS World University Rankings. It now places joint-395th.
According to QS, PUCP's rise occurs as a result of improvement in QS's measure of academic standing and academic reputation. It now ranks 211th globally for QS's Academic Reputation indicator.
Concerning QS's measure of employer recognition (Employer Reputation), it now achieves the world's 102nd-best score for Employer Reputation.
Regarding institutional teaching capacity, QS uses the ratio of academic faculty to students to measure the extent to which universities are supporting high levels of teaching resource. Over the last year, PUCP has recorded a strong improvement in the Faculty/Student Ratio metric.
PUCP is not the only Peruvian university to have improved its position over the last year. Also recording a ranking rise is Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (651-700 group), which has broken into the top 700 for the first time since 2015.
Given an expansion of the ranking, QS now ranks more Peruvian universities than ever before. Eight Peruvian institutions now place among the world's top universities —five more than last year.
"The responses to our two reputational surveys —the world's largest repository of global academic and employer opinion regarding university quality— suggest that Peruvian higher education is beginning to enjoy strengthening international recognition," QS Research Director Ben Sowter said.
"The main sectoral weakness remains research performance: if we rank the world's universities based on research impact, not a single Peruvian university places among the top 1000. Creating strong international collaborations with fellow institutions, and with industry, is essential if Peru is to further improve its ranking performance," he added.
