Qatar Airways presence in Peru may boost Chinese arrivals

19:50 | Lima, Oct. 17.

Chinese tourist arrivals to Peru will increase 30% if Qatar Airways starts operations in the Inca country, National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) Head Carlos Canales estimated.

In this sense, Canales urged the Government to sign a trade agreement with Qatar so that its flagship airline can operate commercial flights to Peru.

"Besides being one of the most important (airlines) in the Arabian market, it (Qatar Airways) offers the best connections to Asian countries (…)," Canatur official explained.

He went on to add negotiations with Qatar Airways started over two years ago.

On the other hand, he finds it necessary to speed up expansion works at Lima-based Jorge Chavez International Airport.

Canatur Head and Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia opened the first "Peru Tourism Fair" on Wednesday.

The event gathers more than 120 companies from all over the country, and 4,000 people —mainly from the tourism industry— are expected to show up.
