President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday affirmed that Peru is at the forefront of the fight against climate change in the region and remarked this task should involve the participation of all sectors in society.

"Under this Government, we have taken clear and defined actions. Peru has been the first country in the region to implement the Framework Law on Climate Change and has been at the forefront in raising awareness about single-use plastic," he said during the establishment of the High-Level Commission on Climate Change.

In addition, the Head of State noted that Peru was the first country in Latin America to ratify the Paris Agreement, taking into account that it could be one of the most affected by climate change, because of its biodiversity, and it is up to Peru itself to place emphasis on it.

Mr. Vizcarra noted that climate change and environment preservation are issues that concern the population. They should lead us to a change of mentality, starting with children and the youth, in order to ensure the future of society.

The establishment of the High-Level Commission on Climate Change, he stressed, cannot be a mere administrative formality, but must reiterate the commitment of the Government, regions, municipalities and civil society to work in a real and effective manner on this topic.

"The COVID-19 situation has in no way placed the climate change issue in the background," said the Peruvian leader, stressing the need to make efforts, as a country, to change the energy matrix, increase the generation of solar energy and avoid greenhouse gases.

Just like the tough decisions made to protect the Amazon from illegal mining, the establishment of this commission will imply taking concrete actions in favor of biodiversity.

The event took place as part of a new session of the Council of Ministers held at the Lima-based Government Palace.
