President Vizcarra calls for responsible vote thinking about Peru

11:10 | Lima, Jan. 21.

The President of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Tuesday called on citizens, so that on January 26 —during the congressional elections— they vote responsibly and thinking about the sake of the country.

"Five days remain until the election (day). Therefore, I want to address all Peruvians this time, so they will go to the polls this Sunday, (I want to) urge them to make their decision responsibly and thinking about Peru," he expressed.

The Head of State said the Congress members to be elected this weekend —despite their short term in office— "will fulfill an important task both with the pending political and judicial reforms, as well as in terms of legislation to continue boosting the development of the country."

"The act of choosing is a citizen right, but at the same time it is a civic responsibility to the country. During the remaining days, citizens must evaluate the resumes and proposals of candidates (…) in order to cast a responsible vote, so we all strengthen democracy and institutions," he stated.

In that sense, the top official requested Peruvians to continue promoting investments, strengthening institutions and democracy, fighting corruption, as well as improving all citizens' quality of life.

Elections

24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
