The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, on Wednesday stated that the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) will enable Peru to position itself as a hub for high-value-added manufacturing, diversify its production matrix, boost industrialization, and decentralize the country's economic development.

The Head of State urged business leaders to invest in Peru, during his participation in the International Forum on Private Special Economic Zones (PSEZs) held at the Lima Chamber of Commerce.

"Private Special Economic Zones are precisely aimed at strengthening our country's competitiveness, diversifying our production, and integrating Peru into increasingly demanding international markets," Jeri indicated.

All of this -he said- will have a significant stimulative effect on the economy, as it will create jobs, generate technology transfer, and foster integration between local and regional companies.

"In other words, ladies and gentlemen, Private Special Economic Zones are an opportunity to diversify the production matrix, boost industrialization, and decentralize economic development; that is important," he pointed out.

The top official said Peru must be a key player in global trade and cannot let this opportunity pass. Therefore, the law establishing PSEZs —approved by Congress, and its regulations— is a powerful tool —though not the only one.

In this context, the President emphasized that this new model opens up a new stage of public-private collaboration, which could become a key driver for the country's modernization and sustained growth.

The Head of State specified that the private sector is one of the Peruvian State's major allies in accomplishing what was once challenging and in setting the country on the path of development, progress, and well-being for Peru's citizens and regions.

"I take this opportunity to issue a call on the private sector, and through you, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps and attachés from other countries, to commit to the country, to invest in the country," Jeri stated.

The President said Peru's main problem is citizen insecurity. He noted that the government is focused on addressing this issue as a primary strategy to combat crime.

"We must continue promoting every measure that allows for the country's sustainable economic growth and ensures peace of mind for our citizens, for those who contribute to the homeland by investing," he asserted.

The Head of State said that, alongside the citizen security powers they will request from Congress, it is necessary to update the Industry Law to complete a favorable ecosystem for the nation's development.

Moreover, President Jeri reminded attendees that a pending issue in Congress is to define where the PSEZs will be established.

He also called on the National Legislature to expedite this decision before the end of the legislative session.
