The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Friday urged the population not to be afraid of getting vaccinated against COVID-19, since all doses from the different laboratories —which are available in Peru— rely on effectiveness above 90% and prevent people from becoming severely ill.

"In general, all vaccines approved by Peru's General Directorate for Medicines, Input, and Drugs (Digemid) and the Health Ministry (Minsa) are vaccines that protect us very well; we must not be afraid of getting vaccinated; getting vaccinated means protecting ourselves, our loved ones, and the people around us," he indicated.

"Perhaps, they may have generated confusion and a certain anguish or fear in Sinopharm vaccines. However, it is not only the WHO (World Health Organization) that has affirmed that they are effective," Mr. Sagasti said.

"The tests that we have conducted comparing those people, who were vaccinated, with the population that has not been immunized yet, enabled us to prove that these were very effective," he added.

"In Peru, there are two predominant variants (Brazilian and British), but the work done by the National Health Institute aims to keep surveillance in force to see if there is a new variant," he said.

"For the moment, citizens can feel very calm because the conducted research shows that vaccines are very effective in destroying the virus," he assured reporters.

Concerning the work of the INS Biomedicine Laboratory, Mr. Sagasti indicated that it is providing an extraordinary and useful service because —on the one hand— it processes molecular tests and also does scientific and technical work in a very advanced way.

"The equipment, which has just been installed in this laboratory, is the third in South America and the fourth in the entire hemisphere; only Brazil, Argentina, and the United States have genomic sequencing equipment that allows 1,200 tests to be carried out instead of the 100 that used to be carried out previously," he explained.
